ABOUT
Slow Funeral is the alias of South Carolina-based musician Mary Norris. She released her first single as Slow Funeral, “I Loved You In Another Life,” in November 2021. Shortly after, Norris put all of her energy into defining herself and her sound through abraded lyrical and musical vulnerability. Her alt-rock band is a marriage of her 90s influences, such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, The Cranberries, and Nirvana, paired with her Americana roots, such as Jason Isbell, Bruce Springsteen, and John Prine. Performing as a 4-piece, Slow Funeral’s live performances have been making early impact in the Southeast, having already shared the stage with acts like Slothrust, owen (Mike Kinsella of American Football), Chase Petra, Molly Martin, Pinkshift, and most recently, the pre-show for Weezer/Flaming Lips/Dinosaur Jr. at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, SC.
Slow Funeral completed their first southeast tour in fall/winter of 2023 and their first northeast tour in summer of 2024. Norris is currently working with producer Corey Campbell on her debut album, Conditions of Trust (release date TBD), after being awarded community/project grants through Chapman Cultural Center, The Metropolitan Arts Council, and The South Carolina Arts Commission. The album details Norris’s experiences growing up and living in poverty in the south, along with topics of abuse, patriarchy, heartbreak, and healing. The first single from the record, “Bugs,” was released on December 8th, 2023, followed by “Purple Roses,” “Hanging,” “Nowhere To Go,” and most recently, “Super Jesus Small Town” on September 20th, 2024.
